Aboriginal Natural Resource Directory
About the Cariboo Chilcotin Aboriginal Natural Resource Management Directory
Fraser Basin Council in cooperation with the three First Nations language groups in the region, including the Northern Shuswap, Carrier-Chilcotin, and Tsilhqot’in, and the Cariboo Chilcotin Métis Association developed an Aboriginal Forest Information directory in 2005. The impact of the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic and the need to diversify opportunities in the forest was recognized by the partners. Based on this consensus the Fraser Basin Council Cariboo Chilcotin Regional office persuade funding to expand the existing directory into a Natural Resource Management Directory. Funding was successfully secured through Western Economic Diversification Canada, Fraser Basin Council and the Ministry of Forest and Range in 2008 to develop and promote the Cariboo Chilcotin Aboriginal Natural Resource Directory.
The Fraser Basin Council has agreed to act as the funding proponent, complete all reporting requirements and has hire a staff member on a contractual basis to develop and implement the online directory. The directory will be marketed in trade journals, at trade shows, and with links to other websites to raise awareness and use of the directory by professionals in all the resource sectors and by industry. To promote the directory with aboriginal entrepreneur’s personal contact will be made by phone and/or in person to gather information for the directory. The directory will serve as a bridge, by connecting, building and maintaining positive relationships.
